One of our guests recently shared this with us:
"When I get on the train after work and I'm commuting and tired and close my eyes, the special place I go to in my mind is Latigo."
We just love hearing that... Now more than ever, it seems people need to look forward to their travels, adventures, and escapes. We need our special places and all the contentment, peace, and experiences they bring us.
So here are five ways to give yourself a little bit of Latigo to daydream about until your next visit. We hope it creates a moment of happy place in your mind, too.
1. Getting unplugged
Sure, our cabins have Wifi, and you can always connect… but we love watching our guests let go. Most people spend up to 10 hours a day staring at screens, but ranch life calls us to hike, ride, work, and rest in rhythm with nature and our animals — no phones needed. How sweet to escape screens and pings in favor of all the other things you can plug into instead, like owl calls and lazy sips of wine, singing coyotes and alpenglow.
2. Big skies and wide-open spaces
There’s no denying that spending time in nature calms our busy brains. Scientists have provided evidence that contact with nature can lead to increased happiness, well-being, even a sense of meaning and purpose in life. With 75-mile views and 100 miles of horseback riding trails to lose ourselves in, life at the ranch is perfect for losing yourself in the natural world.
3. Inspired dining
Just as the Colorado high country nourishes our senses, our delicious food fuels us for our adventures. Meals begin with homemade sourdough bread baked daily and salads topped with dressings made from scratch. No ranch beans and tough beef here; meals are made with locally sourced meat, game, and herbs, like sous vide salmon with coffee beurre blanc, or yak pate en croute. Every Thursday you can count on our full-blown Thanksgiving feast, and there are meatless alternatives at every meal like a black bean tart or a veggie soufflé.
4. Baby animal therapy.
Why try to cheer yourself up staring at adorable baby animal videos on TikTok when you can experience the real thing? Our yak herd is expecting between four and six calves this summer, and if you haven’t spent chill time watching a woolly yak baby, then you don’t know what cute is. Yet.
5. The late-summer landscape.
One of our most beautiful times of the year is when August slides into September. The angle of the sun shifts, the light changes and the sky seems bluer, colors richer. The deer are reveling in their antlers, shifting to autumn gray, and the foxes show the first glossy hints of their winter coats.
We love this time of year in the high country, watching the asters bloom and catching the first tint of gold in the trees. And what a time for trail riding! Frosty cool mornings and sunshine afternoons make the herd feel alert and ready to ride. It’s also a special time because as our families head back to school, adults-only sessions at the ranch offer quiet time for those seeking a different experience at the ranch. It’s one of our best-kept secrets (and one of the few open spots we still have available this year.)
This year we’re so incredibly grateful to see our guests from all over the world coming back and ready to embrace another season at the ranch; we hope the days spent at Latigo stay with you whether you’re here in person or just dreaming of your next visit.
