Trimming the Herd

Trimming the Herd

April 27, 2020

With the barest hint of spring warmth in the ground and flakes of snow gusting down from the mountain, Randy, Hannah, and Spencer set to work down at the winter pasture on the Taussig Ranch. Amanda and Vin were there, of course, as photographic and digging assistance.

Over the course of the winter, several horses had refused to be caught for trimming, and so it was time to round up the whole batch of rascals for a session with the farriers. So, after two weeks of fighting schedules and weather, we finally loaded up the four-wheelers in the horse trailer and headed down the mountain.

Having faced down the Latigo herd in a pasture of this size before, we were all a little wary – it doesn’t take much for the entire thing to go sideways in a hurry. But we had done our due diligence beforehand, asking our friendly ranching-hosts to drop a bale of hay in the corral where we hoped the herd would end up, packing bull whips to be able to turn all sixty-plus horses while they race around, and, of course, cookies for the road home.

It went as well as we could have hoped! The horses all bunched in the corner by the gate and milled around before one of them caught wind of the free hay inside and trotted in as easy as you please. Vin, helpfully, kept digging holes.

The snow flurries eased into a bright sunlight, and we grabbed our halters and began sorting out the troublemakers from the horses with clean, short hooves. It wasn’t long before we had a nice long line of horses tied to rails. Our farriers had their work cut out for them.

Our horses are fuzzy, our spirits are high, and we’re looking forward to another summer at Latigo!

How about you? What are you waiting for? Latigo is waiting for you.
