The Latigo herd is carefully selected and trained to cater to a wide range of riders who come from a wide range of backgrounds – everything from timid riders to professionals.

Hannah George, resident Head Wrangler at Latigo Ranch, here.

I was struck by something when I was giving a tour of the barn the other day: we really are ready to cater to all kinds of riders. Day in and day out with the herd, it can be easy to lose the forest for the trees, but each individual horse makes up for a herd that’s ready to cater to your riding level. Often, we have timid riders or those who’ve never even ride before at all, and there are horses in our herd that make really, really good pairings for those riders. Adventurers are often ready for hotter horses, and we have another good range of horses that can be paired up without overpowering such personalities. Even those riders who’ve been horseback their whole life, or even who’ve won competitions, can find just the right partner for the week in our horses.

That’s what I do every Sunday night: I talk to the people, I learn how they want to ride and what they need in a horses, then I stare at a long list of horses for a long time, and I decide who gets who. Most of the time I get it right, but every so often, whether a rider advances very quickly or has a personality clash, we switch horses mid-week.

Then there are the horses: they need people as much as the people need them. They also need breaks. We don’t overwork our horses, we don’t work them when they’re injured, and their mentality is always a consideration in how I run the barn. If a horses is getting sour, I’ll put them under a wrangler who can give them a fresher take on life. If they are injured, I’ll treat them as best as I can. If they’re scared, I’ll work with them until we can face down their fears together.

If this is your first time putting your foot in a stirrup or your thousandth, we have the right horse for you. A horse that's best for your grandmother, your uncle, you, and your kids. We are also ready to help you progress with your horsemanship. If you want to sit on a horse and have your photo taken, that’s a ride we can do. If you want to learn how to back your horse in a circle and control each, individual hoof, that’s also something to which we can work.

What are you waiting for? Latigo, and the horses here, are waiting for you.
