Latigo is picturesque this time of year (but, honestly, when is it not?). The cold snap that usually hits between Christmas and the New Year makes the snow crunch and squeak underfoot, the sunrises aren’t too early, and the skiing is only surpassed by the feeling of coming in from the cold to a crackling fire and a warm meal.
This past year was good for many, fine for some, and not-so-good for others. At one point or other, we here at Latigo found ourselves in every single state. 2018 was a year unlike any other in the history of the ranch. We had a good staff and a decent business season; however, the wildfire smoke colored almost every week of our summer, and then the wildfire itself pushed us away from our beloved hills and trees. The fall season found us covered in ash and repairing what we could. This winter season looks delightfully busy for us.
You can’t color the past with good or bad brushstrokes, simply saying ‘this year was bad’ or ‘that year was good’. The good and the bad walk hand in hand.
The future is a different creature entirely.
2019 stretches ahead, glimmering like icicles in a sunrise, full of hope and promise, potential and new bookings. We’re going to blaze new trails. Literally. Find even better places to ride, hike, and snap a selfie. We are starting to look at applications for our new crew, and we have confidence that God will bring us the people we need as well as the people who need us.
The future is special because it can hold so much, a blank canvas ready for the living painting.
The past is what our lives look like when the paint has dried and set. There’s no changing it.
So let’s make 2019 a picture for the ages, shall we?
