The Shining Mountains

December 03, 2018

The Rocky Mountains are a stunning and ever-shifting tableau of beauty and vastness. Waking up every day in the midst of such glory is an experience we can’t recommend enough.

The Ute Indians who lived and hunted all of Colorado prior to Cortez’s colonization of Mexico in the 1500s and the subsequent westward expansion of the explorers and settlers from the east coast probably knew Colorado better than anyone. Before the “Rocky Mountains” became just that, they were known by a different name. The Utes called our mountains “The Shining Mountains”.

I can’t help but agree.

Every so often, a guest will gaze out at the miles and miles of view that stretches from our front porch all the way to the Great Divide and ask, “Do you ever get tired of it?”

The only possible reply: “Sometimes we get tired, but never tired of it.”

No.

No, you cannot get tired of the Shining Mountains. They change every single day. No afternoon is the same as the one before it, every sunrise will take your breath away, and even when the day is gray and you can’t see very far, you know they’re there—shining just beyond the clouds and snow.

It doesn’t matter how many photographs there are, because you can always get a new and different one in ten minutes, ten days, ten years… ten lifetimes wouldn’t be enough to get tired of the mountains that shine with golden leaves every autumn, silver frost every winter, glimmering with quartz and granite in the spring, and with summer sun glaring through the few feet left between heaven and earth on our wild Rocky Mountains.

We loved Latigo Ranch! It was our best vacation ever! Cabins were comfortable, food was scrumptious and the wranglers were wonderful.
