We have a crowd of repeat guests, a plethora of repeat staff, some guests who become staff, some staff who become guests, and three children of staff members who came to become staff in their own right. For all of these, Latigo is a special place. The smell of the Tuesday cookout is far more distinctive than Chanel’s No. 5. The warm happiness of freshly-baked granola, sunshine on perfumed sagebrush, and the tang of cattle close-by – all of it can bring back precious moments of times gone by.
The smell that Lisa most associates with her first Grand County dude ranch experience is the smell of mountain rains in the pines. To our surprise, when it rained on Friday evening, a guest-turned staff member froze in place and inhaled like she was trying to recapture a piece of her soul.
Amanda stopped her and asked if everything was okay.
Yes, she said, but she had visited mountains all over, even lived in them for a time, and still had never smelled anything quite like Latigo when the rains have just swept through.
When the wild water rains from wide skies down onto the pines, settles the dust, and revitalizes the plants, it makes memories. For those of you who’ve been to Latigo before, do you remember the smells? Was it the caramel corn or the dust? The worn leather or the hot horses? Cookies, chocolate soufflé, or columbine opening in the heart of summer?
For those of you who’ve never been before… what are you waiting for? Latigo is waiting for you.
