Great Expectations

Great Expectations

February 19, 2018

Here, at Latigo, we want to make sure everyone has a good time, but how do we set ourselves up to make that happen?

It’s usually a good idea to measure your expectations and wishes of a situation before you get involved; by knowing what you want, you have set yourself up to shake satisfaction by the hand when it comes walking through your door. I’ve been thinking about this summer, about what I want to happen, about what would make me happiest.

My answers are pretty simple. I want to spend time working alongside my family. Since we all work together to make Latigo the best that it can be, whether it’s washing dishes, taking overnight pack trips up to the high country, or running into town to get an extra gallon of milk… we are all in the harness, pulling this wagon of a ranch along together. And I love that feeling; I love striving for a common goal with the people I love most.

When people come to Latigo, they can tell.

So what do I think of when I contemplate what would make me happy this summer?

Riding with my mom. We only ever have time in the evenings, so we saddle up and take off into the sage while the last of the day’s warmth starts leaving the aspens and the sky turns every shade of beautiful. It means a moment of friendship together, away from the stresses of the day. It’s one of my favorite things in the world.

I asked Amanda, our resident sommelier and my sister-in-law. Her immediate answer was, “Spencer’s desserts”. It’s true. Those artistic, gourmet, exquisite confections are, indeed, a source of great happiness to all who partake. (see more about them here)

When I asked my brother, Spencer said, “Teaching new people new things.” He hit upon a good one there, didn’t he? That really is one of our greatest joys as owners of Latigo. See, as a rule, we don’t hire experts: we hire people willing to learn. We’ve been in this business for over 30 years, and we know what we’re doing most of the time.

If you get hired on as a chef at the Latigo kitchen, you can be guaranteed that you will walk away in the fall with a new set of knife skills, some great ideas, and a book of recipes that will knock your family’s socks off. If you get hired in the barn, you’ll learn how we try to keep people safe in the Rocky Mountains, how we take care of our herd of 80+ horses, and how to fix fence like a real cowboy. Housekeeping, waitstaff, maintenance, wrangler, chef, or kids’ counselor, at Latigo - you’re going to learn the best of the hospitality business, how to be in that team pulling together for a common goal, and how to have the time of your life - ranch style.

Happiness at Latigo isn’t hard to come by, Whether you’re coming as a guest, wanting to have the vacation of a lifetime with your family, or as a member of our elite staff, striving to serve alongside the best of the best and knowing you are a part of something greater than yourself, the mountains are here to welcome you home.

Summer of winter, guest or staff, Latigo is waiting for you.

We loved Latigo Ranch! It was our best vacation ever! Cabins were comfortable, food was scrumptious and the wranglers were wonderful.
